Knowledge shared by institutions

Susan A. Point is a printmaker, jeweller, and carver from the Musqueam Reserve. She attended Vancouver Community College, where she learned about engraving, metallurgy, and metal deformation. Point began her career as an artist in 1981 when she enrolled in a jewelry-making course. Her early works in this medium imitated the northern Northwest Coast formline style, but exposure to the work of Coast Salish artist Stan Greene inspired her to experiment with traditional Coast Salish representational forms. She has been carving in wood since 1990. Point was once described as "one of a handful of contemporary artists engaged in reviving the ancient principles of Coast Salish two-dimensional design." In 2004 she was appointed to the Royal Canadian Academy and in 2006 awarded the Order of Canada. She has been awarded Honorary Doctorates in Fine Arts from Emily Carr College of Art and Design (2008), Simon Fraser University (2008), and the University of British Columbia (2009). In 2018 she was awarded the Audain Prize for Lifetime Achievement in the Visual Arts.
